Visual clutter detracts from architecture and business
Nothing destroys the distinctive architecture of our communities and natural beauty of the countryside faster than unplanned commercial development and outdoor advertising.

Scenic Illinois has worked with towns and citizen groups to develop effective sign ordinances and design review standards that enhance community appearance. A proliferation of signs or outdoor advertising can create visual clutter that detracts from the unique character and beauty of a place.

However, local ordinances can encourage citizens and business owners to work together to improve and revitalize local business districts for customers and tourists.

Scenic Illinois has conducted surveys and compiled data for what municipalities are doing to regulate architectural and urban design in Illinois as part of the Municipal Design Review Network sponsored by DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.
